Proposed By-Law Voting

By-Laws were written in great detail for a League of 300 players. We are now 1750 members - we cannot continue with a paper ballot from the entire membership to direct our tennis future.

Please support this change by Voting & returning your ballot to your team captain. Your vote is very important. NOW is the time to act.

Your Captains will be telling you about this process and why it should be done.

If you have any questions contact any of the Division or Executive Officers.

Captains: Your postage paid Yellow envelopes containing ballots should be returned to Elery Shaw and postmarked no later than Feb. 10th, 2012.

Captains:  If you are having difficulty entering scores, please read the instructions. Check the paragraph below labeled:  Score Entry Troubleshooting. Then if you still have problems, please check with your division officers. If you still have problems, please email audrey@audreyPalmer.com  Thanks, Audrey

Court Chatter

The Board has created this section for frequently-asked questions.  We hope this information will help to clarify rules and explain how to handle situations that occur on the court.

Have a question about rules on the court?  Send your questions to  timdot@comcast.net   Be sure you include LCWTL in the subject line. Example:  LCWTL - Question on Player Touching the Net.  Your email will receive a response and the question and answer will be included in Court Chatter.

LCWTL plays according to USTA rules.  Should there be any discrepancy between LCWTL rules and regulations and USTA rules, LCWTL Rules and Regulations shall prevail.

New USTA Rule Effective January 1, 2011:

Erroneous “Out” Calls If you change a call from out to in, you lose the point, no matter if you returned the ball in play.

Here is a link to the USTA page describing this change.

The calculation is as follows for any given match:

1. add your rating (to 3 decimal points) to your partners as of that date (that is why it is important to enter matches with the correct match date)

2. add the ratings of your 2 opponents

3. if your rating is higher than your opponents, then there is a formula based on how much higher your rating is than your opponents that is calculated. The result of the calculation is a number of games.

4. This is the number of games that you must beat the opponents by in order for your rating to go up. (For example it might be a range of 3-6 games)

5. So therefore, if you were to beat your opponents by 6 games, there would be no change in anyone's rating.

6. If you were to beat your opponents by 7 games, then you and your partner's ratings would go up.

7. If you only beat your opponents by 2 games (7-6, 7-6) then your opponents ratings would go up and yours would go down.

8. The court that you play on (1-4) does not enter into the calculation

If you would like to see a match history of your matches, please check the front page of the web site and request one.

Player Match History Note:
The points column
1 means that your rating went down - did not beat the expected spread
2 means that your rating stayed the same
3 means that your rating went up - beat the expected spread

USTA rule change

Subject: 2011 Procedure Change
I understand that there has been an important change in the procedure for 2011 for correcting out calls to good.

Can you confirm this?

Jennifer, Orlando, FL

KAUFMAN: Yes, see 2011 Friend At Court, page 47, # 12.  The Code: Players Guide for Matches When Officials Are Not Present

Prior to 2011, if the correction was made immediately and the receiver played the ball back in the court, then a let should be played.

However starting in 2011, the USTA Tennis Rules and Regulations Committee has determined that any call corrected from out to good is loss of point to the player or team that corrected the call, even if the ball is put back into play. (Except on first or second serve fault calls corrected that hit the net in which case the server is entitled to a first serve)

The out call on a ball that was good creates a hindrance to play and it is loss of point due to this hindrance.

We hope this does not encourage players from making erroneous calls and then not correcting them since they will now lose the point.  We have always expected players to be honest.  This will certainly end the action of players calling good balls out, correcting the call and hitting it back in play in order that they can then replay a point that they were likely to lose.  In addition it will encourage players to give their opponents the benefit of the doubt on close balls and continue playing the point.
